Vintage French fabric samples

We found these beautiful French fabric samples at the big Lille Braderie (annual antiques fair), jumbled up in an old box on a stall by the side of the road. On closer inspection we found that they were fabric samples that had been sent out to provincial shops by the large Paris stores to show the ranges of fabrics available. Although they were not cheap they were just too lovely to resist.

Most of the samples still have the original labels attached and the stores included Galeries Lafayette, Grand Magasins du Louvre and Au Bon Marche. Some samples were still in the original postal envelopes and from the postmarks it appears that they originate from around 1905. There are a wide range of samples from fairly heavy velvets to fine laces and satins. The labels attached to the samples are themselves very interesting as they have pictures of the stores or illustrations of garments that the fabrics would be suitable for.

Some of these samples have been featured in the March 2011 edition of Homes & Antiques magazine in an article on vintage sewing items called "Stitched in Time".

Prices from 3.00 per sample. Because of the wide variety of samples it is difficult to sell these by post as it is best for you to look through them to make your choice.
